Comments: Served on ASKARI from February 1970 to February 1971. I was interested to read the history, because one of my collateral duties was "Public Relations Officer," and I was responsible for maintaining the history. I don't think anyone took up that job after I shipped out, because there wasn't much reported after that.

Comments: I was a signalman on board the Askari during 67,68. I remember a mad dash I made along with another sailor, Mike Dowling, out of the swimming pool at Dong Tam during a mortor and ground attack. We first tried to get into a overcrowded bunker filled with Vietnamese who worked in the exchange. A 300 yard run thru exploding mortors, across to the next bunker and a dive for the door way brought up thru the muddy entry into the company of 6 ROC's drinking beer and waiting for the VC to cross the wire. We felt good about our chances with the heavyily armed Korean marines guarding the bunker, so we had a beer while they laughed at us in our swimming suits covered with mud and slime. Gary Reichert
