It was a long time ago when I was there 70-71. Some of the best and worst of times of my life. Roger Metz, Bill Graham and Doyle Chancey were there when QM3 Allen from Roanoke VA was known as "Bird Dawg" the guitar dude..

I'm trying to locate Batchelder who was in A-gang with Mehltretter and me 1968-1969. I've tried Northern Idaho which is where I thought he was from, to no avail. Does anyone remember his first name?

I served on the Askari from January 71 to May 71 I was injured while working on the pontoon and medi-vaced out of Viet Nam to Chelsea Naval Hospital for 11 months. Sure would like to know the corpsman who helped me so much. I worked in the engine rebuilding shop and on the river boats.

It was great to get off the Askari and back to the states. At the time my tour on the Askari didn't seem like much. the more old shipmates I email and talk with the Better those memory's get. All in all It was a Good time The year I spent there. Just wish I could see all my old ship mates from those Good days spent in Viet nam. all crew mates from the Askari should try and re connect with Buddies from the past. we're all about the same age and I'll tell you this as the truth., Reading about our days in a not so Great time gave me Goose Bumbs up and down my spine and I can't rember when that happened last. Thank you all and GOD BLESS each and every one of you.. Charlie

I served on the U.S.S.Askari from 9/69 - 8/70 in Supply as an SKSN with a great group of men. Many memories of hard work, goofing around, and * * * with the "Lifers" on board. I'm a retired school principal now. I believe my service in Vietnam helped prepare me to deal with all the school students, staff, & parents I encountered for 32 years! Thanks for the memories. God bless.
