Comments: I am a "plank owner" of ARL 30. As a crew member, we took the ship down the mississipi river from Chicago [LST 1181]. The ship was recommissioned as Askari and reported to the pacific 3rd fleet under Halsey. While underway, the atom bomb was droped, and we were ordered to report to Seattle. There was a Cruiser there at the dock that preceeded us. We both had the ships dressed with all the victory penants. It was an awesome feeling.W e were given the choice to remain, or honorable discharge.

Comments: I served on the Askari from April 1969 thru April 1970. I have attempted to join the group several times but have found that when I click the "Join" tab an error page pops up. I understand that managing this great site is a tough job and I appreciate all your efforts. When time allows perhaps you could help in this matter. Sincerly, Larry Kliewer, SFP3

Comments: Served aboard 69-70. Made Sasabo trip too.
Comments: I was SH3, ships store operator, and moral petty officer (I showed the crews movies)aboard the Askari from March 1,1970- Feb 28 1971. We had a great crew, I've never seen such hard working group of men. What i recall most was watch duty on the Starlight Scope and the deck patrols keeping a constant lookout for sappers.
