Comments: I served on board the Askari in the Repair Division as a EM3 from 67 to 68. I have been in Alaska since 72 and every now and then my mind returns to that year in Viet Nam. Thanks for keeping the history of the Askari alive.
Comments: My name is Mark Normington. My father James E. Normington served on the Askari during the Korean War. During that time his brother was also stationed aboard. Interestingly enough there were 3 sets of brothers serving aboard at the same time. The reason I am contacting you is my father died when I was 12. I heard a few stories from him but, the Askari has always had a special place in my heart. Maybe you could find someone who knew my Dad and have them contact me. I My father was also stationed aboard the ARL 24 Uss Sphinx. I know my brother saw the Askari when he was in vietnam. My brother was on LST1032 Monmouth County. I would also be interested in purchasing a picture of my Dads old ship. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide me. I do know he was aboard during the evacuation from Hungnam. Respectfully, Mark E. Normington
Comments: I served on the Askari from 9/66 till 1/68 working in the engine room on the way to Viet Nam but when they started giving rates away I became a Boilerman 3rd to get up on the main deck. My transfer sent me to Saigon during Tet 68 and I ended up on the roof of a hotel with the orders "if it moves shoot it"
